Bowl

Manufacturer Manufactured by Rookwood Pottery Company American
1882
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This bowl with its heavy impasto slip-decoration is an example of one of Rookwood's early pieces. The decoration of bamboo and spiders in their webs is inspired from Japanese motifs. Its shimmering quality is enhanced by the addition of gilding. The American Wing contains additional examples by Albert Valentien, see 1973.93 and 69.73.1. For other examples of Rookwood Pottery see 43.67, 45.147, 69.17, 69.37.1–.3, 1973.93, 1974.214.28, 1980.453, 1981.443, L.1999.101, 1991.214, and 1991.335.
