[Walls of Jaffa near the Jerusalem Gate]
Vignes, a naval officer and amateur photographer, first made photographs on campaigns through Sicily, Turkey, and the Holy Land between 1859 and 1862. This picturesque view of the walls around Jaffa originally formed the left-hand portion of a panoramic triptych of the port city as seen from the road to Jerusalem. The walls—constructed during the rebuilding of Jaffa after its siege by Napoleon in 1799—were demolished in 1870 to allow for the expansion of the city.
