Thure de Thulstrup American, born Sweden
1891
Not on view
Double-spread illustration from Harper's Bazaar showing the horse show held at Madison Square Garden in 1891. The illustration was based on a drawing, made on the sport by the Swedish-born artist Thure de Thulstrup. He had moved to the United States after his military career, and became an illustrator for many of the popular illustrated weekly’s and newspapers such as Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper and Harper’s. He specialized in military scenes and scenes of every-day life in and around New York. The Museum has a large group of his sketches and drawings, which came in through a gift in 1951. This print shows how his drawings were translated into commercial images in popular publications.
