Photo Source Photograph from Domenichino (Domenico Zampieri) Italian

Not on view
This daguerreotype copy of a seventeenth-century oil painting of John the Evangelist by Domenichino, come from the estate of the British toxicologist and photography pioneer John Swaine Taylor. Just as contemporary museum visitors compulsively photograph works of art with mobile phone cameras, the pioneers of photography recognized the new medium's utility for copying works of art in other media, transforming them into portable and collectible images.
