Known for his graphically complex street photographs, Garry Winogrand emerged in the 1950s and 1960s as one of the masters of postwar American photography. This relatively straightforward portrait of a young boy in a straw hat winking at the photographer dates from just after Winogrand’s landmark 1967 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Titled New Documents, the show featured photographs by Winogrand and his peers, Lee Friedlander and Diane Arbus, each of whom are shown in these galleries.
