Tall Clock

Attributed to Matthew Egerton Jr. American
1810–15
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
Asa Blanchard, a Kentucky silversmith whose name appears on the face, almost certainly did not make this clock, but rather imported it from New Jersey for sale through his shop in Lexington; his inscription postdates the clock's original manufacture and the stamp on the dial indicates that the works are of English manufacture. Typical of New Jersey tall-clock case form are the arched swan-neck pediment and the elliptical and circular stringing on figured mahogany veneers. The gilded wooden finials and the punched background of the hood are unusual features.
