Table

1860–72
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This table was made for Mrs. Robert W. de Forest, at the time of her marriage in 1872. It may have been part of a Louis XVI revival suite that included matching chairs, a sofa, and cabinets. Marcotte, a leading cabinetmaker of the period, had produced furniture in Paris with Ringuet Le Prince before setting up shop in New York in 1858. It is possible that this table was made in Paris for Mrs. de Forest's parents, the John Taylor Johnstons. The table closely relates to furniture Marcotte made for the Johnston's home, such as 68.69.2.
