Shirt
For the spring/summer 1996 "trompe l'oeil" (optical illusion) collection, Martin Margiela invited photographer friends to make black and white photographs of vintage garments, in this case a dual-tone knitted jumper, and used these images as prints for lightweight summer garments such as this top consisting of a printed jersey overlaid by a printed synthetic gauze. Combined with a long coat, which featured a trompe l'oeil print of a 1930s Shetland overcoat, this striking piece combined the contrasting lightness of the gauze with the "found" visual motif of a heavy, knitted jumper.
