Enthroned Bodhisattva, probably Manjushri
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. This enthroned Manjushri, missing its aureole and defining attributes, is identifiable by comparison with cat. no. 164. A Javanese inscription dated 782 indicates that Manjushri was highly venerated in eighth-century insular Southeast Asia; it records the installation of a cult image of Manjushri at the instruction of the Sailendra king’s guru, a Bengali, at the center of a mandala of icons at Candi Sewu, central Java.
