Cirrus
Burge’s compositions focus on concepts of cartography, connectivity, and shifting visual effects. In Cirrus, circular nodes and lines of various lengths create abstracted maps of terrain both real and imagined, an impression amplified by the work’s textured surface and dense patterns. The artist suggests the shifting atmospheric effects of cirrus clouds through shimmering grays and tonal variations that convey movement, depth, and different modes of light. With its fractals and delicately twisting and coiling patterns, the allover composition evokes organic structures such as cobwebs and magnified images of organisms. By altering our perception of both natural phenomena and man-made sources of information such as geographic and celestial charts, Burge challenges networked systems of knowledge.
