Male Nude, Study for Samson and Delilah

ca.1730–69
Not on view
Jean François Amand, a student of the successful history painter, Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre (1714-1789) made this study of a male nude as he prepared his entry for the 1756 Prix-de-Rome competition. His winning submission, Samson and Delilah, is today in the Landesmuseum Mainz. In the painting, this figure, who ties Samson’s feet with rope, is depicted clothed and with a plumed helmet.

The attribution to Amand was first suggested by Benjamin Peronnet.
