Mount Fuji and flowering plants
This dramatic image of Mount Fuji by Suzuki Kiitsu (1796-1858) with autumn flowers in the foreground by Yamamoto Sodō (died 1866) is the collaborative work of two top pupils of Sakai Hōitsu(1761-1828), who established the Rinpa school in Edo in the early nineteenth century. Kiitsu’s reputation was already well established in his day and he was quite prolific. Yamamoto Sodo, though less well known, is listed in the compendium of artists Koga biko (1904) as living in Shitaya Kanasugi (Tokyo, where Kiitsu also lived for a while), and was a scholar of Chinese studies as a well as a painter. Sodō was also father and teacher of the artist Sakai Doitsu (1845-1913).
