Distant Fermo, No. 2
Sir Muirhead Bone was a Scottish printmaker and watercolor artist noted for his depictions of architectural and industrial subjects, city views, and landscapes. From 1910-12, Bone was in Italy; during his stay he traveled along the Adriatic coast, where the province and hilltop town of Fermo (shown in the distance) are located. In this print, Bone betrays his architectural training by carefully drawing a bridge structure -- its shaded supports being among the darkest areas of the image. This bridge spans a dry river bed where tiny figures walk beside a puddle-lke rivulet of water. Bone sketchily indicated a few trees and grassy vegetation on left bank, and densely drew the vegetation on the far right bank. While printing the plate, Bone left faint films of ink (plate tone) to convey the atmospheric sky, and parched earth of the river bed.
