For Sottsass, the surface of an object was the site of first encounter, so he designed a number of patterns, including Schizzo, that could be used for textiles or laminates. Within the contained space of a room, the various patterns create an intense sensory experience. This particular example derives from the black-and-white abstract pattern on the cover of composition notebooks.
