Designs for textiles with stylized flowers and scrolling leaves
Page of book containing 185 leaves with a collection of lithographs, aquatints, engravings, and other media, with ornamental designs published by Fleury Chavant in Paris, part of the publication "Guide du Dessinateur de l'industrie: une macédoine de dessins variés , tels que fleurs, ornemens, etc. ... Ouvrage destiné aux fabricants et dessinateurs de soieries... et Papiers Peints..." This plate contains four designs for textiles with different types of stylized flowers and scrolling leaves, executed with black ink over thin, light brown paper. The first design consists of alternating dashed stripes with small lozenges flanked by a small rosette and vertical strips of semi-abstract branches with bundles of stylized flowers, black C-curved leaves, cornucopias, and zig-zagging ribbons, separated by pairs of thin, vertical lines. The decond design is made up of vertical strips of checks, filled alternatingly with diagonal undulating lines, some of them intermittent, and bundles with stylized flowers, flower buds and leaves, separated by a vertical garland with semi-abstract flowers and leaves, bordered by two thin stripes with small, semi-abstract flowers and leaves of different kinds. The third design is made up of interlacing branches and leaves, with stylized flowers of an exotic kind and offsetting scrolling leaves, possibly inspired on Indian textiles and printed calicoes. The final design consists of scrolling leaves and thin interlacing garlands with small, stylized flowers and leaves, some with thin offsetting branches, over a grid made up of pairs of thin vertical and horizontal lines. The designs were likely used for printed textiles, whether for garments or furniture, or for wallpapers.
