Studio d'Arts Décoratifs, 3e Série, Pl. 12, Neuf Dessins avec beaucoup de finesse
Twelfth plate of the third series of pochoir pattern books, titled "Studio d'arts décoratifs", with Art Deco textile designs created by Nicolas Sorokine and published in Paris by Armand Guérinet, probably in the second half of the 1920s or the early 1930s. The series consists of a title page with index and 12 plates with designs numbered 1-12, each with numerous designs, bound with dark blue linen boards. The designs contain a variety of geometric motifs, birds and flowers, all typical of the Art Deco style, which was characterized by its eclecticism, drawing from a variety of sources that sought to combine old European design traditions with the modern style diffused by avant-garde art, while also reflecting the romantic fascination with early Egyptian and Meso-American "exotic" cultures promoted by archaeological discoveries of the times.
This plate consists of nine designs with floral motifs. The first is made up of scrolling branches with flowers and leaves, executed with purple and shades of green over a light gray ground. The second design is made up of vertical branches with leaves and flower buds colored with dark blue and red, and the third is made up of scrolling branches with triangle-shaped leaves and rosettes colored with blue, green and red, both over gray grounds. The fourth is made up of large semi-abstract flowers and leaves executed with green, yellow and purple over a gray ground. The fifth design is made up of large stylized flowers colored with purple and green, semi-abstract roses colored with red, and stylized leaves colored with green and gray over a cream ground. The sixth design is made up of scrolling brown branches with green and brown leaves and red and green fruits over a cream ground. The seventh design is made up of semi-abstract roses colored with red and gray, and wheat ears and scrolling branches colored with bluish-gray over an off-white ground. The eighth design is made up of horizontal zig-zagging stripes made alternatively with stylized berries colored with pink and red and with offsetting thin branches with tiny red fruits and with rows of triangles colored with black and red and decorated with bundles of red berries and purple leaves. The final design is made up of scrolling branches with stylized leaves colored with blue and black, stylized flowers colored with blue and black, and semi-abstract roses colored with red, black and blue over a cream ground.
