Jar
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Zuni artists produced this style of jar, with an angular underbody and bulging shoulder, between 1700 and 1750. Making the pottery required great care at each stage of a long and demanding process. The women first offered prayers and thanks as they dug the earth to retrieve the clay. Then they cleaned and sifted the clay, coiled and shaped the pot, coated the surface with a clay slip, paint the design, and, finally, fired the pot.
