A Warrior's Vision

Attributed to Henderson Ledger Artist B Southern Arapho
ca. 1880
Not on view
Here, an artist vividly represents the transformative moment of a medicine vision on a double-page spread of a ledger book once owned by fellow artist Frank Henderson. The individual undergoing this experience at the lower left communicates through wavy lines with a composite supernatural being astride a horse. A dense cloud of flying bullets surrounds the horse but leaves the protagonist unharmed, suggesting the protective power of the vision. The split-horn headdress, painted tipi, and eagle feather staff at left are all signs of exceptional accomplishments in leadership.
