The running of the Quintana and the breaking of the spears (Zu der Quintana rennen und Spiess brechen), from a series depicting the wedding of Wolfgang Wilhelm, Duke of Pfalz-Neuberg, Pfalzgraf, and Magdalena, Duchess of Bavaria, in Munich, 1613 (Plate 10)
In this scene, mounted nobles participate in a race around a fountain while the newly married couple and their family members watch from windows above. The participants are given spears (center, left), and they break them upon passing a seated costumed figure at upper left. This etching is one of 11 etched illustrations from a book containing a description of the wedding festivities. The marriage of Wolfgang Wilhelm, Duke of Pfalz-Neuberg, Pfalzgraf (1578–1658) to Magdalena, Duchess of Bavaria (1587–1628), took place in Munich on November 12, 1613, and the commemorative book was published by Wilehlm Peter Zimmermann in 1614 in Augsburg. Plates 4, 7, and 10 are in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
