Chinese-Style Flower Basket (Karamono hanakago)

ca. 1890–1901
Not on view
Like his father, Wada Waichisai I spent his early career producing simple baskets for carrying fruits and vegetables. He later made utensils for sencha tea gatherings, including Chinese-style (karamono) flower baskets—like this tightly plaited example. Waichisai’s meticulously crafted works were in high demand among literati circles.
