Ruins and Foreground, Acropolis, Athens (55. Athènes. 1842. Acropole. ruines et 1ers plans (pour tableau))

Girault’s original label inscription—"55. Athènes. 1842. Acropole. ruines et 1ers plans (pour tableau)"—indicates that this view of the rubble-strewn Acropolis was intended as a model for the foreground of an as-yet-unknown painting. The desolate scene, a panoramic extension of his photograph of the Erechtheion, resembles nothing so much as the remnants of one of the many sieges suffered by Athens over the centuries.
