Girault’s original label inscription—"55. Athènes. 1842. Acropole. ruines et 1ers plans (pour tableau)"—indicates that this view of the rubble-strewn Acropolis was intended as a model for the foreground of an as-yet-unknown painting. The desolate scene, a panoramic extension of his photograph of the Erechtheion, resembles nothing so much as the remnants of one of the many sieges suffered by Athens over the centuries.
