This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
In 1775 a British traveler wrote "the Gardens of the Palace...are in a sad Condition. Some one has persuaded the King to Cut down all the Trees." Robert’s two companion paintings here, combining grandeur and desolation, document the neglect that necessitated such changes. Woodcutters and their families appear on the left, courtiers on the right. Marie Antoinette, in a light-colored dress, bends toward two children, while the king, in a red coat, talks with a key member of his staff.
