Conrad Detlev, Count von Dehn
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Sumptuously dressed according to the latest French fashion, Dehn was sent to Paris in 1723 by the Duke of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel to congratulate Louis XV on his ascension to the throne. Largillière must have painted the portrait after the diplomat’s farewell audience at Versailles on November 30, since it includes gifts he subsequently received: a bejeweled boîte à portrait, with a miniature of the king, as well as an illustrated volume of Louis XIV medals.
