Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
The architectonic structure of Marden’s unfinished painting Untitled (Cold) reflects a range of formative encounters with the art and writing of China and South Asia. It also bears witness to the artist’s interest in stained glass, sparked by an unrealized commission for the Basel Cathedral. Here, the artist corrals hues within black lines that resemble the lead cames in stained glass. Marden described the triangular and diamond shapes as glyphs, investing them with a linguistic property. Successive campaigns of scraping and painting enliven the painting’s surface and allow the viewer to reconstruct the process of the work’s making.
