This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
Balke arrived in the Swedish capital for the first time in the summer of 1829, not only to receive training in an academic context then unavailable in Oslo but also to evade military conscription. Apart from a study visit to Copenhagen and extended sketching expeditions in Norway, Stockholm would remain his primary home until 1833. Perhaps painted about twenty years after he left, this view was influenced by nocturnal prospects of Dresden by Dahl, with whom Balke studied in 1836 and from 1843 to 1844.
