Seated Man

Photographer Macky Kane Senegalese
1941–1943
Not on view
The amateur photographer who took this image likely experimented with the medium during his leisure time, capturing his friends and relatives at social gatherings and special occasions. Among the dozen vintage prints that have survived from this series, several present individuals posing in front of walls crammed with small prints, some of which are attached to wood panels, while others are placed in wood frames. These portraits, taken in the interiors of the sitters’ homes, attest to the ubiquity of photography in Saint-Louis in the interwar period.
