Bust
This figural bust by Waylande Gregory dates from his time at the famed Cranbrook Academy, outside of Detroit, where he had a studio and taught. Gregory’s artistic beginnings were rooted in traditional monumental sculpture, and he would become well known for his large-scale commissions, including Fountain of the Atom for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. This is one of the most expressive figural busts that he produced during his formative time at Cranbrook and presages his later work at the World’s Fair.
