In her NUD CYCLADIC series, Lucas renders soft flesh in a form completely divorced from the context of a bodily shape. Made from stuffed hosiery, this work bulges with biomorphic tentacles that have the appearance of intestines or intertwined limbs. The writhing mass also resembles an abstracted version of the Hellenistic Greek statuary group Laocoön and His Sons. By playfully referencing the smooth and stylized female forms of ancient Cycladic figurines, Lucas’s transformation of nylon stockings into twisted bodily contortions constitutes a feminist response to such canonical sculpture.
