This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
Like many sculptors before him, Rosso made studies from Michelangelo’s unfinished altar decoration in the Medici Chapel in Florence. Rosso found this anonymous plaster cast somewhere in or near the Musée de Louvre and cast it, along with other plaster reductions of famous ancient and Renaissance sculptures, in bronze and wax over plaster.
