Mary, Queen of Scots with her son James

January 26, 1779
Not on view
A full-length portrait, turned slight to right, shows the queen standing with her son James VI of Scotland (later James I of England, Scotland and Wales). Mary wears a dark gown with lace ruff, cap and cuffs, and holds a book in her left hand and rests her right on the child's head. James wears a brocaded gown with a ruff and pointed cuffs, and carries his hat and a rose. The subjects are shown in an interior with curtains in the background at right and a table with a vase of flowers under a casement window at left, through which buildings can be seen. The print is based on a painting then in the collection of the Worshipful Company of Drapers (today no longer firmly attributed to Federico Zuccaro).
