The Little Park
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. The craggy trees that Fragonard added to the foreground of the wash version of The Little Park on view nearby (ca. 1763–65) were carried over to a painted version and then, in turn, to this jewel-like work done in gouache, an opaque form of watercolor. Executed on a smaller scale than the painted version of the composition, it has a more silvery gray palette with touches of ocher and rust, suggesting early fall.
