Heads of a Lion and a Tiger
This print confirms the early artistry of two brothers in the Landseer family. Algernon Graves's catalogues indicate that Edwin drew both ithe tiger and lion shown here when he was seven and etched the latter, while his elder brother Thomas, aged fourteen, etched the tiger (Edwin later developed into Victorian Britain's most renowned animal painter). The youthful tiger sketch was preserved in a scrapbook included in Edwin's posthumous sale (May 12, 1874, lot 1012) and bought by Agnew's.
