Hafed, a Celebrated Deer Hound
Lewis's print reproduces a painting that Landseer made of his favorite deerhound in 1835, commissioned by "The Sportsman's Annual" for inclusion in a lithographed series of dog portraits. Hafed appears in profile to the left, extending his tongue slightly, and wearing a ringed collar. When the lithograph appeared, Ackermann & Co. recognized the strength of the image and asked Lewis to etch a large version aimed at print connoisseurs, publishing it in 1837.
