Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
Here, Horace Poolaw captures a group of eight men and one woman, all on horseback, preparing to entertain a crowd in the late 1920s when reenactments, Indian pageants, and fairs were particularly popular. Vaudeville and Wild West shows as well as the advent of Cowboy and Indian movies affected the way Native people were seen and possibly how they saw themselves. On this hot, dry day, Poolaw brings the viewer into the scene completely. This event may have been the Craterville Park Indian Fair near Cache, Oklahoma.
