Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
The design of this young girl’s kimono, decorated with wisteria flowers and abstractly rendered trellis on a lavender ground, sparked the admiration of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959). An avid collector of Japanese art, especially prints, the American architect purchased this piece during his time in Japan, maybe in 1905. The pattern’s modernity and freshness also anticipates Taishō period (1912–26) kimono design.
