Kimono with Peonies
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender. This extravagant, richly decorated kimono (hōmongi) depicts a garden with flowering peonies of all colors. The realistically depicted petals and leaves are influenced by Western oil paintings. It is made of silk crepe with occasional weft-patterning of staggered lines in silk and metallic threads. The patterns are stencil paste-resist dyed (kata-yūzen), painted, and embroidered with silk and metallic threads, with applied gold paste (kindei-gaki). It is lined with bright pink silk crepe and has light padding at the hem.
