In the 1790s, Vigée Le Brun produced a number of allegorical portraits, often choosing guises for her subjects from the mythological repertoire. Inspired by the sitter’s face, with its “heavenly expression,” the artist shows the buoyant young Princess von und zu Liechtenstein (1768–1831) as Iris, the Greek goddess who personifies the rainbow.
