Plate

1891–95
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This earthenware plate features the crackle glaze first developed by Hugh Cornwall Robertson (1844–1908) when he worked at his family’s pottery Chelsea Keramic Art Works. The border design of the repeated motif of a simplified rabbit was designed at Chelsea Pottery, a firm that later became the Dedham Pottery Company. The incised outlining of the rabbit border is rare and found only on the earliest examples of this pattern. The rabbit border would become the most popular and plentiful border design of the Dedham Pottery.
