Manufacturer Manufactured by Rookwood Pottery Company American

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
This plaque is an example of the Vellum glaze line glaze, which was officially introduced at the St. Louis Fair in 1904. The translucent mat glaze is characterized by soft, delicate colors such as the greens and blues in this impressionistic, misty landscape. Vellum glaze plaques were made experimentally from 1896. The pottery framed the plaques in oak and they were intended to hang on a wall. Edward George Diers (1871–1947) worked at Rookwood from 1896 to 1931. The American Wing has additional examples of Rookwood Pottery, see 43.67, 45.147, 69.17, 69.37.1–.3, 1973.93, 1974.214.28, 1980.452, 1981.443, L.1999.101, 1991.214, and 1991.335.
