Miniature Tall Clock

Caleb Leach American
1785–90
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
The housing for this clock by Caleb Leach, somewhat larger than that of most miniature tall clocks, but about half the height of a standard one, has a separate bonnet instead of being a unit with a door in back typical of most miniatures. Since the clock appears always to have been in this case, and the case has urn and spire finials and oval door escutcheons that show the influence of the Federal style, the movement must date from near the end of Leach's career.
