Black Monsoon

Black Monsoon is one of the final two prints that Hodgkin produced with Judith Solodkin, the master lithographer of Solo Press in New York City, where Hodgkin had editioned many works over the previous ten years. A new looseness and freedom in Hodgkin's technique is visible in the deep black splatters and puddles of pigment in this print, whose murky depths presage the larger spills and sweeps of the Venetian Views (MMA 1995.425.1a-p and .2a-p; 1995.467.4a-p and .5a, b).
