Satyress and her Infant

Workshop of Severo Calzetta da Ravenna Italian
ca. 1520 or later
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 958
In this tender vignette, a satyress looks downwards with a dreamy and pensive expression while an infant satyr at her knee glances upwards, grasping a bird in his right hand. The candle socket in the satyress's right hand and the shell-shaped inkwell would have provided illumination and ink for writing.
