Study for the Figure of Christ in a Deposition

late 16th–early 17th century
Not on view
This red chalk drawing represents a copy of Federico Barrocci’s Deposition, painted for the Chapel of San Bernardino in Perugia Cathedral in 1567-9. The drawing is attributed to one of Barrocci’s followers, the late Mannerist painter and engraver Ventura Salimbeni. While Christ’s head is not fully articulated, the artist’s concern with rendering the serpentine configuration of the body is highlighted in the adjacent studies of the pose of the legs.
