Allah

Isma'il Gulgee Pakistani
dated 1999
Not on view
The powerful brushstrokes of this painting read Allah (God in Arabic). Gulgee’s use of thick oil paint is unique, as calligraphy is often practiced on a smaller scale and with finer brushwork and materials. His technique reflects an interest in abstract expressionism which became popular in the 60s and 70s throughout Pakistan.
