This small illuminated handscroll once functioned as a portable calendar-almanac, or ruznama. Its diverse contents include texts describing the stations of the sun and moon, the musical modes, the Muslim calendar, the times of prayer in different seasons, the Christian calendar, and the times of sunrise and sunset—all arranged according to the position of Istanbul, where its owner is assumed to have lived.
