Wood Panel with Calligraphy

11th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 457
The program of interior decoration for Andalusian palatial residences included a tile dado surmounted by carved stucco or stone, crowned by wooden friezes and cornice elements. This panel is probably a fragment of such a frieze. Carved in deep relief, it bears part of an inscription in kufic script against a vegetal background.
