This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Goya was one of the shareholders of the Banco Nacional de San Carlos (known after 1829 as the Banco de España). Between 1785 and 1788, he painted six portraits for the bank, five of which represented directors of the institution, including this one.
The Count of Altamira is shown seated at his desk, with one hand resting alongside his work papers. He was well known for his diminutive height. The English politician Henry Richard Vassall-Fox, 3rd Baron Holland, claimed that Altamira "was the least man I ever saw in society, and smaller than many dwarfs exhibited for money."
