Western Gentleman in Oriental Costume

Not on view
The life of poet-adventurer George Gordon Byron, known universally as Lord Byron (1788–1824), inspired the fashion for Europeans to be painted in Middle Eastern dress, especially those who had made the journey across the Mediterranean. The identity of the sitter in this fine little portrait has been lost, as has the name of the artist who painted it.
