Arabs Crossing a Ford

1873
Not on view

Fromentin’s three sojourns in French-occupied Algeria, between 1846 and 1853, served as the basis for paintings and books that garnered him a reputation as a leading exponent of Orientalism. This late example was painted to order for New York collector Catharine Lorillard Wolfe. The composition exists in two versions; the other one (private collection) is undated, and it has not been established which came first.
