Portrait of Richard Hamilton

Printer Maurice Payne British
1971
Not on view
Known for his portraits of friends and family members, Hockney depicted the artist Richard Hamilton in a consciously naive figurative style characteristic of his drawings and prints of the period. This portrait exemplifies Hockney’s keen ability to capture the sitter’s personality and the momentary sense of an arrested movement. This impression is a proof Hockney dedicated to Henry Geldzahler, as is indicated in an inscription below the image. The Met’s first curator of twentieth-century art, Geldzahler is the subject of an unconventional portrait by the artist also on view in this section.
